Shep's Lori-Dry is a specialised dry food formula designed for both pet and wild lorikeets, providing them with a complete and balanced diet. Based on the renowned recipe from Stan Sindel and Dr. James Gill's authoritative book, "Australian Lorikeets" (essential reading for all lorikeet enthusiasts), our formula delivers optimal nutrition through a carefully balanced combination of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids.

Evolution of Our Recipe:

Following the publication of Stan's book, dry food diets for lorikeets and lories gained tremendous popularity. The key innovation was using Rice Flour and Baby Rice Cereal as the base ingredients, instead of Wheat Flour, Which Is Commonly found in many competing products. Rice is significantly more digestible for lorikeets and lories.

In 1988, we registered the Lori-Dry trademark and began commercial production. Through years of experience and observation, we made several critical improvements to the original formula:

1. Pollen Replacement: We removed pollen (which caused storage problems) and substituted additional Whole Egg Powder to maintain proper protein levels.
2. Iron Content Adjustment: We sourced Rice Cereal without iron fortification after noticing potential liver problems in some exotic lory species, possibly related to iron buildup.
3. Vitamin & Mineral Optimisation: In 1991, we eliminated supplemental vitamins and minerals from our formula to prevent harmful accumulation of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals over time. This decision was validated years later when avian veterinarians and aviculturists in the United States identified excessive vitamins and minerals as contributing factors to liver issues in lories.
